I. — Origin

Behind Headlines was born from a fascination that became a passion, then an obsession: tracking down the original press prints that lie sleeping on flea-market stalls, in antique dealers' reserves, or at auction-house turns.

At a time when images multiply, dematerialize, and vanish into an endless stream, Behind Headlines seeks to restore the full value of the photographic object. The strength of a print lies in its materiality: the paper, the texture, the marks of time, and the fragility of a support that has survived the years. Faced with an increasingly virtual image, we defend a form of material intelligence — objects that carry a narrative within them.

These photographs once told the story of the world. Made by great photojournalists, often forgotten today, they carry fragments of history, gazes, lives, and moments that will never return.

What began as a personal quest became a profession. Today we travel across Europe in search of these fragile witnesses to the past, exploring flea markets, private collections, and auction sales, convinced that they deserve to be preserved, passed on, and looked at again.

Founded by Romain Dumont, who holds a master's degree in art history from the University of Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, Behind Headlines upholds an approach in which every print is regarded as a photograph, a historical document, and a material trace of its era.

Our ambition is simple: to preserve these images before they disappear.
